Wildlife danger on the roads of Hajdú-Bihar, let’s drive more carefully!

Local News

The deer mating season lasts from the second half of July to mid-August. The wildlife is much more careless during this period, more active during the day, so we can meet them much more on the roads next to the farmland. Police are asking drivers to drive with extreme caution even if there is no traffic hazard warning sign.

The advice of the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters:

  • Slow down! The maximum speed allowed does not mean you have to drive that much. If you go outside at a speed of only 80 km / h instead of 90 km / h outside a populated area, you will have much more time to react in the event of a sudden incident.
  • Don’t use your phone! If you pay attention to something else, you can react more slowly. Maybe an animal is standing on the road in the next turn or behind the next bump.
  • Switch on the high beam outside a populated area! This allows you to see through a larger area. In the event of oncoming traffic, of course, switch off the reflector!
  • Keep a greater following distance and keep an eye on both sides of the road.
  • Wild animals can behave unpredictably. There are times that they don’t move, but they can also jump and start galloping in either direction.
  • If you see a deer, expect more!
  • Use your car horn if there’s an animal on the road! Looking at the headlights, they may not see the vehicle, an audible signal can help them know where the danger is coming from. Be careful, however, if the animal is not on the road, it may be startled by the sound and jump right in front of the vehicle.
  • You can also meet deer or other wildlife animals within populated areas. They usually occur in the dark, but can show up anywhere, anytime.
  • Use the emergency brake if an animal suddenly gets in front of the car!
  • If you see a dead or dying animal on the road, call 112! Do not attempt to pull it off the roadway as it may still be alive and a terrified animal could cause serious injury.
  • Do not take a dead animal with you, as it is considered as theft!
