A swamp turtle was rescued from almost certain death in Hajdúhadház. The protected reptile was found on Sun Street and, fortunately, was not left to its fate.
The emergency call first ran to 112, from where the message was forwarded to the mayor’s office, who notified the competent authority of the Hortobágy National Park, who provided the contact details of the competent nature guard. After the animal was successfully identified, staff from the mayor’s office took care of its new residence, which became a nearby stormwater reservoir.
This turtle is protected in Hungary, its nature conservation value is HUF 50,000. Habitat destruction and aggressively expanding, wild jewel turtles could put their herds at risk.
