The donkey stud of the Debrecen institution is growing nicely every year, where this year it is the second healthy offspring, said dr. Gergely Sándor Nagy managing director. The vibrant and impeccable gray stallion was born on September 26 after a good year of pregnancy, and its caretakers, baptized in tradition, named it after his birthday, giving him the name Demjén.
Although he remains with his caring mother for a long time, Demjén is already very active; he plays a lot and takes a dust bath, which visitors can also see at the paddock in the Amusement Park area.
The preservation of native animal species and breeds is of paramount importance for the Debrecen Zoo, therefore it has been home to Hungary’s only native donkey breed, the imperial donkey, since its foundation, and in recent years it has been possible to regularly announce the birth of new offspring.
These calm-tempered, yet intelligent and well-taught animals can be encountered by the general public not only in their catwalks but also as busy chariot pullers who set off on special occasions.
