A series of programs presenting the values of Debrecen’s Great Forest (Nagyerdő) will be organized by the Debrecen Depository Committee ( Debreceni Értéktár Bizottság) and several cooperating partners entitled “The Great Forest Week” between 4th and 10th October 2021.
István Puskás, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, and János Mazsu, Chairman of the Debrecen Depository Committee, held a press conference about the event on 29th September 2021 at the Méliusz Library.
István Puskás emphasized that there may not be a need to justify to the people in Debrecen how important the Great Forest is in daily life, or how important natural and cultural values it had in the past, has today and will have in the future. Sometimes, however, it is good to pay special attention to it, as to other elements of our lives, to remember what value they represent.
The Great Forest has always belonged to the everyday life of the city’s inhabitants; it is no coincidence that it is a constantly recurring motif in the culture and artistic life of Debrecen, Mazsu said. It is still one of the important pillars of the city’s quality, the healthy lifestyle of the citizens, and sustainable development. We have to take care of the Great Forest, just as it takes care of us in a hundred ways, and this is what the programs of the Great Forest Week draw attention to, he added.
In addition to the Debrecen Depository Committee, many local organizations including the Debrecen Forestry of Nyírerdő Zrt., Hortobágy National Park, Méliusz Juhász Péter Library, Csokonai Theater, Nagyerdei Cultural Park, and Médiacentrum Debrecen Kft. took part In the implementation of the Great Forest Week.
Following the press conference, the deputy mayor opened the exhibition “Természettár Otthon az erdőben” presenting the forest dwellers’ nests and homes. The exhibition can be seen until 30th October during the opening hours of the Méliusz Library (Bem tér 19 / D) on the 1st floor.
