Opposition Calls for Special Parliamentary Session on Ukraine War

National

Hungary’s opposition parties have called on Speaker of Parliament László Kövér to convene a special session of parliament for Wednesday.

The lawmakers of the Democratic Coalition, the Socialist Party, Jobbik, LMP and Párbeszéd propose discussing their draft resolution condemning the Russian military aggression against Ukraine. Under the draft, parliament would call on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to dissociate himself from the Russian military intervention and resolutely condemn the Russian aggression. The motion calls on the government to express solidarity with Ukraine, fully implement the decisions NATO and EU made with Hungary’s participation concerning “the military aggression launched by Putin’s Russia”, and provide safe haven to ethnic Hungarians of Transcarpathia and all other refugees arriving from Ukraine. The opposition parties demand that the licencing procedure of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant upgrade should be suspended and the Moscow-backed International Investment Bank “serving Russian interests” expelled from Hungary with immediate effect. The related document was posted on parliament’s website on Monday.
