Heritage of 100 Years

University

The University and National Library University of Debrecen (UNL) turns 100 years old this year. From this occasion, a conference and an exhibition are organized and a publication is also issued that tells the story of the library.

The University Library is almost as old as the University of Debrecen itself; it was established in 1916. In May 1918, the library was opened on Simonffy Utca; it had almost 10.000 volumes. By 1932 the number of books had grown to 100.000. 1932 was the year when the library moved to its present place.

During the 100 years, the university has changed, developed: nowadays, the number of students is 100 times bigger than in 1916 and the number of books is now beyond 6 million.

UNL has become Hungary’s second largest libraries; it has two holdings, the legal deposit collection and the scientific collection supporting the educational, research and medical work of the university. The holdings divided among seven research libraries (the Agricultural Science Library, the Arts and Sciences Library, the Kenézy Life Sciences Library, the Engineering Library, the Library of the Faculty of Education, the Social Sciences Library, and the Library of the Conservatory) are available for the employees and students of the University and for the citizens of Debrecen.

The jubilee program series starts on 30 September 2016 at the aula of the Main Building.
