The Hajdúböszörmény District Court ruled on the case of a defendant who had been experimenting with explosive devices in the yard of his own home without holding a trial, issuing a criminal order.

The man, who was interested in explosives and explosive devices, decided to make a firecracker at home. He searched online for instructions on how to make various homemade guns, rockets and fireworks, and also asked an advanced artificial intelligence-powered chatbot about the subject.

After deciding to make a homemade rocket or firework capable of producing an explosive effect, the man bought a box of firecrackers at a second-hand market in Debrecen in February 2026. He then obtained additional materials needed to make the explosive devices from the internet and from a shop in Hajdúböszörmény. He subsequently made four firecrackers at home, putting small steel balls into one of them, and carried out test explosions in the yard of his house.

The man was unable to continue experimenting for long. Based on information received, police searched his home on March 25, 2026, and seized gunpowder as well as materials and devices needed to manufacture explosive devices.

In a criminal order issued on July 27, 2026, the court found the defendant guilty of preparing to unlawfully possess or use explosives or explosive devices. The previously unconvicted man was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years. The devices seized in connection with the offence were also confiscated.

No appeal can be filed against the criminal order, but a hearing may be requested within eight days of its delivery. If a hearing is requested, the court will hold a preparatory hearing. The decision has not yet become legally binding.
